World of Crapsack

Post by Prak »

Because.

Basically I'm watching Invader Zim and want to try writing up an AWoD hack for the world of Vasquez' works. Because it would be fun. Even if I'll probably never find three other people who want to play.

So for the base types:
Alien
You come from a place that isn't earth, and are here for some reason. Maybe you're abductors who got stuck here. Maybe you're the scout for an imminent invasion force. Maybe you just got bored.
Examples: Zim, Planet Jackers, The probers who woke up Squee

Artificial
You were built. Likely out of metal, but possibly you're foam and given sapience through someone's insanity. Hell, maybe you're a disembodied rabbit head or a figure that somehow crawled out of a painting.
Examples: Gir/SIR Units, Nail Bunny, Sickness, The Doughboys

Great Old Ones are coming to town....
You're god damned fucking ancient. And incredibly powerful. Well, you're supposed to be, anyway. There's not actual guarantee you'll have the power you did before getting sealed behind a wall, in a small child, whatever.
Examples: Crossing Gods, Shmee, The Entity Behind the Wall, Mrs. Bitters

Trauma Sponge
You seemingly exist purely to absorb trauma. Physical trauma heals remarkably quickly, and mental trauma just.... doesn't seem to affect your actual ability to function. Not that this is too particularly useful... you may well just get used as a shield. If you last long enough, you probably become a Crazy.
Examples: Squee, Dib, Fillerbunny

Crazy
Holy shit are you fucking nuts. It's a really shitty life, you've probably lost anything that doesn't particularly contribute to your purpose, such as the ability to draw more than stick figures if you're a flusher. But you do have a purpose, and some minor aspects of life probably don't much matter to you if they would impede it.
Examples: Johnny, Devi

Hmm.... should probably have at least one more type, assuming there's actually a sixth type represented, and Crazy... I'm not sure about, because there's really only one example, despite two other characters being portrayed as on their way to becoming Crazies.

Subtypes

Aliens
Invader
Invaders are aliens who can infiltrate another species, even with the flimsiest of disguises. They form galaxy spanning empires, crushing all other species under the iron grip of...capitalism?
Examples: The Irkens

Prober
To hell with invasion, you just want to learn through crazy and morally questionable experiments. You've already done it a lot, so you have lots of knowledge about various species, though not always particularly useful knowledge... It's hard to find a use for the knowledge that a man can inseminate a chicken.
Examples: The wheelchair bound aliens from Squee

Thug
Fuck invasion and knowledge, you just need other races' shit. Possibly their planets. Possibly them. But it's not like you're inhabiting them or subjugating them, probably just fueling your dying sun with them. Which, you know, is different.
Examples: The Planet Jackers

Artificial
Service Unit
You were made to be a utilitarian servitor for someone, possibly another player character. You don't actually have to do what they say, you're just already connected to another character at the start of the game to make things a bit easier for game runner.
Examples:Gir/SIR Units

Insanity
You were created when the insanity of a Crazy was imprinted on a physical object, granting it motive force and self sufficiency. Again, you're probably tied to another character, but under no compulsion to do what they say. Because you're a manifestation of a specific insanity, you tend to encourage and try to guide your motivator towards that insanity and the actions tied to it.
Examples: The Dough-boys, Sickness, Nail Bunny

[-]
Examples:

Great Old Ones
Elder God
You are an ancient god, possibly you were sealed in a geographic location before possessing a small child, but you are once again free, and able to wreak havoc. ...Or create large amounts of collateral damage while pursuing an ancient vendetta. You know, all good.
Examples: Crossing Gods

Demon
A creature of horror from the deepest, darkest pit of existance, possessing an earthly vessel. ....Strangely, you're not too out of place. Hell's kinda more like a really shallow version of Earth, and most people won't notice your oddities. Hell, you don't even have to disguise your sickly tentacles or great horned skull head, but you can if you wish.
Examples: Shmee, Senior Diablo

Creeper
An eldritch creature who began life as a human, went through some odd event, and became more. You tend to be good at stealth, misdirection, and command. ...once you go through whatever metamorphosis you need to, that is.
Examples: Mrs. Bitters, the Meanwhile Vampire

Trauma Sponge
Tormented
The Tormented exist for the sole purpose of having horrible fates inflicted upon them, so that others may laugh. In a group, they tend to attract attacks and occupy opponents, and so can actually be useful simply as cannon fodder. They actually tend to stay rather positive despite this fate, actually, the better to torment them, of course.
Examples: Filler Bunny

Nightmare Plagued
The Nightmare Plagued suffers horrible, soul shattering dreams nightly, leaving them with restless nights where they lie in their own sweat. The upshot of this is they start to get used to it early on in childhood. As such, the horrors of life are less terrifying, especially those which assault their mind, and they are incredibly difficult to tire out, as they're more or less in a perpetual fatigue, and have learned to function through it.
Examples: Squee

Rubber
Rubbers take an amazing amount of physical punishment, but don't die. In fact they don't even seem particularly hurt, certainly not for very long, anyway. Basically, you contribute to the party by just not collapsing to attacks that would fell a lesser man.
Examples: Dib

Crazy
Flusher
A small mercy for the World of Crapsack is your presence, as you've been placed on the planet to kill those who simply won't get with the program and would do tremendous harm to others, especially "innocents", such as child molesters. Unfortunately for the world, you're not exactly stable, and you may be the only thing containing an eldritch horror that wants to destroy the world. As such, sometimes you flip out and kill people because of some little thing, or you have to go kill someone who hasn't even done anything because the blood changes colour when it dries. You lose your ability to create, as you become a force of simple destruction.
Examples: Nny

Mad Scientist
For one reason or another, you are eons ahead of your contemporaries in innovation, seeming to be scientific progress personified. You are surrounded by incredible technology, often to the point of being able to equip your employees and friends with the stuff. You tend to be a bit detached though, often only showing joy when something scientifically amazing happens, and otherwise being mostly devoid of emotions.
Examples: Dr. Membrane

Artist
Yeah, you went insane. In fact, you probably were driven to it by the suppression of your artistic drives. But you struggled, and you spent your own free time fostering your art, painting what *you* want to paint (or draw, or sing, whatever) even when you had no idea what you were creating. In the end, you went crazy, but you kept your art, and some semblance of your mind, so, it's something. You're less likely to flat out kill or destroy, but sometimes that can be creative too.
Examples: Devi

So I figured out a full three types of crazies, that's good. Artificial is giving me a little trouble.

I really enjoyed the works of Vasquez (especially JtHM and IFS) and will be very interested to see what you come up with.

Good luck!

So, now we talk about abilities.

Aliens, and Mad Scientists, are generally going to have high tech be their major power. Pretty much all aliens are going to need enviro-systems. Invaders will have their backpacks that give them various things like spider legs, their enviro-suits, non-atmospheric jets, etc. Probers basically get lots of random info, and tools for acquiring more. Thugs probably get some kind of War Form like power, possibly representing an exo-suit kinda deal. Aliens should likely be on a ritual or possibly feeding schedule, ritual to represent having to recharge tech, feeding representing the need to just go get more or different tech. Zim seriously only waits a few minutes for his micro-goggles despite ordering them from off planet and other wise has lots of crap basically just lying around. Mad Scientists honestly don't get anything like disciplines, they just have loads of dots of the Mad Science resource, and the ability to build something that mimics disciplines. When they've got a device mimicking a discipline, it's on a ritual schedule, just needing a recharge (they'd have their own power points to power devices they're using).

Artificials actually do get powers, much like promethians in AWoD, and are on a ritual schedule for them. Gir seriously just needs to plug in, or veg out in front of the TV, or whatever, to recharge his batteries. On the other hand, I don't recall Gir ever having his internals gummed up by all the shit he eats, so maybe his batteries are actually fueled by a matter to energy converter type system, and thus maybe he could actually be on a feeding schedule. The doughboys... well, honestly the doughboys and nailbunny, and sickness would actually be NPC versions of Insanities and on a continuous power schedule, if any. But regardless of schedule, there's one definite, their powers revolve around driving people mad, and making them do what they want.

Great Old Ones have probably one of the most varied power sets. The crossing gods display resilience and electric blasts, demons... actually don't display a lot of powers, though they tend to have alien forms, so maybe their "powers" are physical. Creepers are generally actual monster types, a vampire, Mrs Bitters is a wraith, etc. They're likely on ritual power schedules, except vampires, obviously they feed. But Bitters probably teaches because her power ritual involves absorbing hope and happiness, so she just spends a couple hours each day injecting a bit of hopelessness into school children. Demons may just need to sit around and soak up ambient despair, Elder gods probably absorb emotions tied to their natures (the crossing guards could reasonably have been feeding on the meager rivalries and hate of children.) Actually, this all points to a feeding schedule, they just spend a lot of time doing it.

Trauma sponges are interesting. I'd say Tormenteds, like Filler Bunny, seriously feed on being tormented, or possibly on their own hope, or something. Either Filler Bunny is empowered by hoping that he'll have a day where nothing horrible happens to him, or he's empowered by being tormented. Either way, he's basically on a feeding schedule. Nightmare Plagued get their power simply by sleeping and having nightmares, so I can actually see them having either a ritual or lunar schedule. Rubbers... well, their main powers are Revive the Flesh and Restoration, but I'm not sure what kind of schedule they should be on. Maybe lunar, since Dib's most active and resilient at night.

Crazys.
Nny's powers are "combat" prowess, the ability to escape notice (at least by police), and a house full of torture devices. He also has to keep the wall coated in fresh blood. So, ritual, hey, why not. He spends two hours going out finding a victim, killing them, and painting his wall. Simple enough.
Mad Scientists were covered above with aliens.
Artists. Ritual. They spend two hours working on their chosen medium, and they get.... whatever they do.

Yeah, needs a bit of work, but it's a start.
Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

Right, so as much as some of the examples don't really display 8 full powers, or would be better served with just absurd access to resources, I need to try and set up full sets of 8 powers for as many as possible. While I could do a setting hack which is simply lower power, I don't want to come to the WW problem of "Game Line A is more powerful, inherently, than Game Line B, and never the twain should meet." So there'll probably be lots of auspex, obfuscation and obtenebration.

Please keep this up Prak... I actually have a pair of players who are very big fans of Vasquez's work and we've been talking about running an AWoD game. However, running them through AWoD with Crapsack type characters is definitely something I might be able to pitch to them.

Well, I've wanted to work up something involving his work for gaming with for years, I just need people to show interest.

...and time.

...and to use the leisure time I *do* get.

Completely open to suggestions on this.

Some of the character type's amuse me.

What's bad is a few years ago I was considering a supernatural parody story--something short and goofy--where a Lovecraftian Horror from Beyond appears in the form of a five-year-old child (albeit one with no eyes, just circular empty sockets) with a voice that sounded like...Well, the nearest thing is Anghammarad from Going Postal. A quiet whispery voice(s) which sound like they're coming from far away. And having to deal with that assuming corporeal form means some thinking is built-in.

One of the scenes in my head was Lo-Ru Engonttar waking up someone it knows in the middle of the night.
"WHAH...what do you want?"

"....coooookiees....."

"Go get them yourself."

"................can't..............reaaaaaaaaachhhhh...."

"Oh, okay. We need to make you a step-stool, you know that?"

"..............yeesssss.........."

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

--The horror of Mario

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

Eating lots of food would be a ritual schedule. Absorbing hope would be a feeding schedule.

at the moment my ability to work on this is spotty, basically dependent upon my ability to convince the school library staff that it's classwork.

And it's becoming increasingly obvious that we need a tech based discipline, specifically for the Servitor Units and Mad Scientists.

welp, that's disciplines figured for 11/15 character types. One, the Mad Scientist, is.... difficult... until I figure a tech based discipline.

Alright, I got the first science discipline cobbled together, mostly by copying existing effects and reflavouring. Let me know if the new effects are too major for where they're at.

Manic Science
Basic Disciplines
  • Maniartifice- By spending a power point and passing a Logic+Mechanisms test, you may finish any invention or device in a single scene, though it takes the full scene to do so.
  • See My Wondrous Device!- You show off an invention or device and tout it's benefit to the world, thus making people love you. As Awe of Presence.
  • I'll Show Them!- You plumb the depths of anger and outrage, becoming the very image of the mad scientist. As Dread Gaze of Presence
  • This Won't Hurt a Bit- You carry a variety of toxins and diseases in syringes. Though usually inadvisable, you're fucking crazy, so a satchel or bandoleer of anthrax and warfarin is a joy to you. You may make attacks with these syringes, and while the actual syringe won't do much damage, it will not break just for being weilded with weapon force, and it carries a more deadly consequence than just a bit of pointy metal. By spending a point of power, you can produce the effects of a Bitter Fruit toxin, Abyss of the Body disease, or Tongue of the Serpent poison. Any delay is reduced by one unit (Until Death>Days>Hours>Minutes>Seconds). You are still vulnerable to disease and poison yourself.
Advanced Disciplines
  • Appeal to Authority- When the world's going to hell, people look for those in white lab coats to explain what the fuck is going on. You use that to get your way. As Majesty of Presence.
  • Plasma Cannon- You fiddle with a few switches and dials, and then something bursts into fire as it is hit by a giant mass of plasma. As Fire Starter, but the visual effect is that of superheated gas.
  • Powered Armour- You have a massive suit of techno-armour back at the lab. You also have a belt that allows you to teleport it to you at a moment's notice. As a simple action for two power points, you may call this armour to you, immediately clad in it. It will grant you four soak dice and two strength points just as flesh of marble does. It does not protect against electricity. Any time you would normally acquire a new discipline or power, you may instead build a new device into your power armour with the following benefits: "static" state powers may be integrated such that they are activated at the same time and in the same action as the armour, and all "device" powers are treated as Manic Science powers, meaning they are detected by magnetism, and nullified by salt.
Elder Disciplines
  • Force Field Projector- As Force Field of Potence
  • Weird Science- Mania fueled sessions of frankensteining can achieve prodigeous effects. The scientist can practically transmute one material into another, duplicating the effects of Gold and Honey.
There'll be another one, Technovoyeur, which will be mostly sensory type stuff, and possibly the core discipline of Probers

Cuz apparently I gotta break this down for you dense motherfuckers- I'm trans feminine nonbinary. My pronouns are they/them.

Well, got mad scientist starting disciplines figured, including som technovoyeur powers decided upon, more coming when i get home.

EDIT: Ok, added the last power for Service Unit (yes, SIRs have plasma cannons. The reason Gir never uses his is because he's broken. He doesn't have a lot of things.)

Artists have their list up, meaning everything, except creeper, has it's list set up, Prober will get a rework once I have a functional Technovoyeur discipline, but it works for now.

EDIT: Here's Technovoyeur

Technovoyeur
-Basic Disciplines
  • The Goggles- You wear great and unweildy goggles, they let you perceive your world better. Even through non-visual senses. Seriously. Don't ask how. As Supernatural Senses, but your power is focused through a constructed sensory aparatus.
  • Nanodrones- You may call on a nearby colony of nanites to do your snooping for you. Lazy bastard. As Small Witness
  • Nanite Pouch- You carry nanites on your person in someway, whether in a vial, or actually inside of you, and you can release them. As Body Colony
  • Hack Master- You've mastered the esoteric art of Hollywood Hacking, and can access virtually any camera in the world from any other computer. As Distant Reflection, with computers as the medium.
-Advanced Disciplines
  • Circlejerkobserve- As Chain of Eyes
  • Lab Whispers- From long nights in the lab, you've learned the secret language of the animals upon which you endlessly experiment. Mostly they scream. But you can still understand them. Hell, maybe you have an animal to mad scientist translator chip in your head and you just forgot. As Feral Whispers
-Elder Disciplines
  • Let Me Consult My Records- You have amassed great and many reams of information by peeping on people through SCIENCE! And probing. Mostly probing, really. At any rate, this probingobservation has granted you a deep understanding of the world around you, and by consulting them you may receive answers about reality and the future as if you had used the Divination power from Auspex.
  • Nowhere to Hide- You are now connected through your apparati with people you've previously observed and may spy on or go to them at any moment by punching some of their key data in. As The Truest Name of Names of the Blasphemies.

What do a Prober's Goggles do?
The Gaming Den; where Mathematics are rigorously applied to Mythology.

While everyone's Philosophy is not in accord, that doesn't mean we're not on board.

You don't need new disciplines for tech. Mad Scientists can just HAVE Awe. And Lure of Destruction.

Power Armor is flavor text for Giant Size.

But they needed to be in a single discipline so it could be a core.

What do people think of the third Artificial type being "Vehicle" or something for Tak's ship? Or would that just be a Service Unit that took Giant Size?
